wacked. what can i do to get them both back?

Hi

No way that you can delete Explorer or Systray (Notification Area), but go
with Cari's suggestion.

I did have someone delete the Printer Spooler Service earlier this year.
Even the Print Team were impressed at that one! No, no one still has any
idea how the user did it!

Any Service can be deleted via the Registry - you don't go there very often
though, do you? :-))

Nah, I try to avoid it! It's horrible in there! The printing poster
claimed he'd never been there!

But importing a registry file that configures services will surely do
that to you. I bet they had visited www.blackviper.com hoping to
configure their computer for better performance and used one of his
whack registry files.

It is possible to delete any file in XP if you really want to, just it
takes a lot more work to delete some files than it does for others :)

Some people don't like playing around with the Registry - believe me!!!!
Personally I don't advocate it!!

I don't know very many people who do. I totally agree. Personally, I
am constantly playing around in the registry, but there are many
websites that offer registry files (such as Kelly's Korner). You don't
actually have to go in the registry, just double click the file to
import it. That is what I meant by importing a registry file could
delete services or just about anything it wanted to do ;)

Editing the Registry can be hazardous. With Kelly's files, the risk is
lowered. I would recommend Kelly's 'tweaks' over a manual edit.

Again, I totally agree. Kelly's files are just fine. I was just making
the point that there are files such as reg files or vbs scripts that can
delete things you don't want to have deleted like was seen with the
deleted spool service ;)

Just to be clear, Black Viper does not offer registry hacks, rather a list of services one can "safely" turn off to save resources. He gives reasons, and describes what is safe, and what isn't and what should be left alone. As well as "ALL" MS sites do, he has a caveat to be careful on what one does. For the typical home user not using networking, or remote access. the need for certain services is simply not needed.

Two things. First here are his registry hacks (.reg files contained in
the .zip files): http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/registry.htm

Second, Black Viper has not updated his website to include the changes
made in SP2 yet. I know he is working on it, but if you apply one of
the old registry patches to a SP2 system, you will end up with duplicate
services (because of name changes), some componenets will no longer
work, etc. He also has not fixed problems that occur when disabling
certain services (COM service being one of them) when relating to McAfee
AntiVirus.
