I can't send email after modifying the message. Why?

When I create a new message and select Send, as expected the message goes
into the Outbox, grouped by date, and with its subject line displayed in
italic. If I decide to modify the message, though, the message does not get
sent. When I make the changes and again press Send, the message still appears
in the Outbox but the it is no longer grouped by date and the subject line is
not in italic. Then, when I click on Send/Receive, those messages in the
Outbox (that are not grouped by date and displaying their subject in italic)
DO NOT GET SENT. I've checked all the configuration items I know about so,
please, if anyone knows what I'm missing here, I'd appreciate some guidance.
