Please check if your Mailserver needs authentification. If yes, then enable
authentification in the server settings in your windows mail account
settings.

There is a new TCP tuning feature in Vista which is
not compatible with some servers.
a. Go to the Vista start menu and type cmd
b. The search results will display a program named "cmd"
c. Right-click on the link and select "Run as administrator"
d. type "netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled" without
the quotation marks
e. Test your POP account and see if you can now download your mail.
f. If nothing changes, re-enable the autotuning feature by typing
"netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=normal"

Have you tried it after uninstalling your antivirus and firewall?
I don't know what else could be blocking port 110.

Hi again!
I have just tried your advise to no avail!
I think it has to do with my provider or Vista
I have tried to e-mail my provider but I think I must wait another month for
a reply.
Maybe this is a ''Dell''problem ?
Thanks again for Your fast reply.

The ploblem is I don't want to change my e-mail address as I have had the same
for about ten years!
I can still use my laptop(fujitsu Siemens)but I want to solve this as it
must be solveable. I also forgot to mention I am using a Netgear ADSL modem
router which I have checked setting but can't find anything amiss as I am
also using wireless conection for laptop.

???

I didn't notice anyone suggesting that you change you email address.

No need to change your email address.

Are your laptop and desktop computers checking the same email account?
If so, the laptop may be downloading and removing emails from the server
before your desktop has a chance to download those emails.

Maybe if you told us what settings you were putting into your email account
setup...
What mail server for POP & SMTP?
What ports?

POP3:mailbox.aon.at
SMTP:email.aon.at
AON is my Austrian provider
All the same as XP with laptop.

You didn't reply to a prior post of mine:
