I have been using outlook for several years and no problem. Past few days, I
cannot receive email. I get asked to log in and when I do, I get the error
message: 0x800CCC92, server rejected your login.
My ISP contends, that since I can log into my webmail and check my emails,
the problem is with my outlook settings and they don't support that!
I have removed McAfee thinking may be it was the cause. Didn't help. I have
also re-installed outlook (detect/repair) a few times and no difference.
Would appreciate any help to solve this.

First, Detect and Repair will do nothing for this as you have found out.
It's your account settings. You'll need to check them. If your ISP doesn't
support Outlook then they might have settings for Outlook Express. The basic
settings are the same.
It's just ignorance that they don't support Outlook.
Who is your ISP?

Thanks for your reply.

The ISP is COX-Orange County. I agree, they should at least provide the
basic seetings for outlook express. I have checked the settings and even had
outlook test them by sending email. All boxes get checked except the one for
logging. However, when I check my email through webmail, it shows up in the
inbox.

"All boxes get checked except the one for
logging"
What do you mean by this?
Are you setting authentication or anything else?
I found some info on the server names for you but their support site is very
poor.

The servers you should use are:
POP Server: pop.west.cox.net
SMTP Server: smtp.west.cox.net

0x800CCC92 is a no server error so check you are using the above servers. If
you are and still have issues then post back with any error messages.
You might also have "something" that is blocking incoming email. Disable any
antivirus email integration or any add-is that might effect email transfer.

Yes, the server names you provided do match what I have.

Earlier, I was refering to the "Test Account Settings" button within Outlook
under "Email accounts" under "Tools". When I test it, several taks get
checked:
Establish network conn, find outgoing mail server(smtp), find incoming mail
server(pop3). Only the Log onto incoming mail server does NOT get checked and
a "Enter Network Password" window pops up with the server, user name, and
password enteries which all seem correct. So, I press OK and it pops up again
and again...

I have already removed McAfee from my computer and don't have any other
virus scanners.

Should I re-set the password or user name?

I"d reset the entire account but do it manually and don't let Outlook set
anything.
If that doesn't work try the "log into account before sending email"
setting.

I did reset manually and it didn't work. Not sure where the settings for "log
into account ....."is.

Hi Green Meadow: I am reading your description and it sounds very similar to
my issue that I am having (see my post today under 'not receiving emails in
inbox but able to send". I keep receiving the 'enter network password' popup
window; and I am able to receive emails when i log onto my sympatico (ISP)
account through hotmail.com (webmail). My ISP told me originally too that
they do not support since my account was working properly as I was able to
receive through webmail. Now they have referred me to microsoft as they think
its a 'registry key' problem. Did you resolve your issue?

YES. Finally, today after an entire week and many re-installations of outlook
and other silly things. I just simply did a system restore back to the day
before my problems started. That did the trick and outlook is working fine.
In case it's under:Start---all programs---- accessories--- system
tools----system restore.
good luck.

Thank you..I will try that..does the system restore delete any files or
programs?

No programs will be deleted. May be some data files you may have created
between the time you choose to restore to up to now. You can of course back
those up on a flash memory (jump drive) before you proceed.

Thank you. I ust tried to do the system restore and the system was not able
to restore to an earlier date as no changes were made to my system. Do you
have any other suggestions.

I am having the exact same problem. However, it only started when I
installed Outlook 2003 on a Vista, it worked fine on my XP laptop. I
contacted my provider and they sent me a link to the Microsoft web site
indicating that I needed to update Exchange Server 2000, but I don't use
Exchange Server. One think interesting with my error is that if I check the
box "remember password" and enter the password, it works fine. If I
"uncheck" it, I am prompted for the password and it gives me the "unable to
retrieve password" error. I can download, but since my kids are sometimes on
my computer, I don't want mail to auto download without any password
protection. Have you had any luck with your errors??

Hi there Bjoerti: I am still waiting to hear back from this webboard for
help! My ISP cannot help..says its a microsoft error but its a coincidence
that this took place on a day when their outlook server was down and when
they outsourced their email to microsoft! I have my save password box
checked as per their instructions so now it is not prompting me to enter the
network password but I still cannot receive emails in my inbox.
