I can't open any documents in word

I have Word 2003, SPS3 and when I try to open anything in word, I get a
document that isn't written in english, it's symbols and letters and numbers.
How do I get it to display in english?
 
Are you opening Word first, and then trying to open the document, or are you
trying to open it by finding the document in "My Computer" or "My Documents"?
If you are doing the latter, then are you sure it is a Word document? Is
the extension ".doc"?

If you are opening Word first, and if it is a Word document, then try this:
Tools, Language, Set Language, and make sure English is selected.
 
What is "SPS3"? If you mean Service Pack 3, there is no such thing for
Word 2003, so which version of Word are you really using?
 
Word 2000 also has a SP3. What part of the OP's post leads you to
believe that it is more likely to be 2002 instead of 2000?
