I can't get this to work..

I have been trying to get the new Windows Defender 2 to work on my computer(I
am using Windows 2000 Me Edition) and I keep getting this error:

This software requires GDI+ Please load the Windows 2000 Security Software
Prerequisite Pack"

So I go to the microsoft website and go to the help page about this problem
and I do every step they told me to do. But I keep getting this stupid error
and I don't know what to do now. I do have the first verison of Microsoft
Antispyware Beta 1 on my computer if that helps.

Hmm - the version of Windows, as you've stated it, is somewhat confusing--

If you do Start, Run, type in "winver" without the quotes, and hit
enter--what version does it say there?

Is Windows installed in \windows, or \winnt on your system?

Is the gdiplus.dll file that you extracted as part of following the
instructions from the web site now in place in the system32 subdirectory of
the directory in which Windows is installed?

What Service Pack level is applied to Windows on your machine?

Ignore the questions--I wasn't thinking well--they are unncessary.

Let's concentrate on where GDIPLUS.DLL is installed.

It needs to be in the system32 subdirectory of the directory where Windows
is installed.

If it is in a different location, copy or move it to the system32 directory.

Ok what I did was when it asked me to unzip the file, it told me to click
browse and then double clicked desktop. That is where I put it so if this is
not the right place, how do I go about putting into the right place?

Do this:

Start, run,

%windir%\system32

and hit enter.

That should open an explorer window into the system32 subdirectory of
wherever Windows is installed on your system.

Just drag the file off the desktop into an empty space in that explorer
window--don't let it get into some other folder.

That should allow the install to proceed.

Well I try that but it is still giving me that same error message, I am just
have tempted to take off the first spyware program cause if this is the kind
of stuff I have to go through just to get a program loaded. Forget it, I
will just probably buy a new computer later on because it seems like
everything is going towards XP now.

Can you check in %windir%\system32 to see whether gdiplus.dll is really
present there?

If not, try dragging the file off your desktop into that folder again.

This is not the most user-friendly installation, I'll certainly agree.

Yeah I checked there before I posted and it is there, I dragged it off of my
desktop and put it where you told me to put it.

OK - does the file match this listing:

05/04/2004 11:53a 1,645,320 gdiplus.dll

Something isn't write here--either the wrong file is involved, or we haven't
got the location correct.

The syntax %windir%\system32 should take care of getting the location
correct, so all that I have left is that we have the wrong file in that
location.

You need to have downloaded this:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...9c-df12-4d41-933c-be590feaa05a&displaylang=en

And run it, which should extract three files--the one listed above, and two
text files. You can discard the two text files, they are not needed. The
gdiplus.dll file needs to be placed in the above listed location.
