Hi,

I need some help please in laymans terms I'm a total novice at this. I just
got a new computer with XP Media and I went to install my external hard drive
which is a Micro Solutions Backpack, Model 155010, E/N00237, Series 6 Driver.
I had to download a driver for it which I did and installed it. When I go
to the device manager it says it is there and working properly but location
is unknown. When I look in my computer I don't see it anywhere. I went into
a program and tried to "save as" just to see if something would show up but
it didn't. I'm confused, if it is there where is it? Can anyone help me?
But really in total laymans terms please. How can I get it to show up in my
computer, etc.

Thanks so much for your help.

Check here: Doubleclick the My Computer icon on desktop. Now look under
Devices with Removable Storage and see if you have an "E" or maybe
an "F" drive listed, "D" is probably your CD/DVD drive. Rightclick it and
click Properties.

Hi,

I have a removable disk e, f, g and h but when I click on the properties I
can't find anywhere where it says something about the external hard drive
that I've installed (I think anyway). Should I be looking for something
inparticular? When I click on all of them I get a totally blue pie chart and
it says file system unknown. Does this mean that none of them have the
external hard drive?

Thanks for your help.

I would guess from what you've said, that E, F, G & H are a built in card
reader or something similar. It's likely that your new disc hasn't been
formatted.
Try this:
Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk
Management then you'll see all your Disk Drives displayed. If one of these
does not have a Drive Letter allocated to it, you will need to click on it
and click Format.

It's possible your Control Panel may not show the icons mentioned - if not,
click on Switch To Classic View.

Hi Olivia,

It sounds like your external hard disk needs to be assigned a drive
letter. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click [Start]
2. Go up to [Settings]
3. Go across to [Control Panel]
4. Go across to [Administrative Tools]
5. Go across to [Computer Management] and click
6. In the left-pane of the window that opens click [Storage]
7. The menu should expand. Next click on [Disk Management]
8. The lower-right-pane will show the storage devices that are installed.
9. Right-click on the device and choose [Change Drive Letter and Paths...]
10. In the new window that opens, click the [Add] button and choose a
device letter.

You should now see the device in 'My Computer' with the letter you
assigned it.
