I can't find my post

Hello everyone.

Could someone pray help me? On Monday, Jan. 16 around 2:00pm I posted a
message entitled "Migrating files." Therein I asked if I could use the Files
and Settings Transfer Wizard to transfer word-processing documents and
pictures from my desktop to my laptop. I specifically wanted to know whether
I could do this with (1) two computers featuring Windows XP operating
systems and (2) a null modem serial cable and/or a serial PC to PC file
transfer cable. Moreover, I pointed out that I (1) did not wish to email the
files and (2) could not use a floppy disk, seeing that the target computer,
the laptop, has no floppy disk drive. This last observation also bears
significance in relation to my wish transfer files from one Windows XP-based
computer to another. For I question whether I could use the Files and
Settings Transfer Wizard to instruct the target computer to receive the
files such one might do with a Wizard Disk.

The overarching theme of this message, however, is that I have no feasible
way of knowing whether someone was gracious enough to reply to my original
post. The problem is that this news group os entirely too popular for the
amount of messgages my microsoft.public.windowsxp.general inbox will hold.
For instance, if I post a message and come back to check it a half a day
later, the posts other users have thenceforth made will download first,
effectively blocking my post from downloading. I concede that if you
right-click the microsoft.public.windowsxp.general folder the short-cut menu
shows a Find feature. However, I tried it with no success (I suppose it
searches downloaded messages only); besides, in fiddling around with the
Catch Up option on the short-cut menu, I appear to have deleted all 60,000
or so messages that had been in cue.

So, in short, I would really, really appreciate it if someone could essay to
answer the following inquiries. (1) Given all I've said, might there be some
way of retrieving the original message "Migrating files." (2) If not, could
someone attempt to answer my question anew? (3) Where might I find a good
source of information concerning how to use this news group more
effectively? (4) Could I do this from the web? (5) Must the
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general folder check messages every time you
clcik it? (If not, I think I might be able to contrive a way of seeing my
message before its swept away by the latest wave of messages. ...Too hard
all the same.)

Suffice it to say, though I fancy myself as a motivated person, I could
really use your help. Thank you for your consideration.

John

Hello,
Are you using Outlook Express or similiar news reader?

Try right clicking the newsgroup you want, select properties from the
dropdown, select the local file tab and click the reset button at the
bottom. All headers should clear. Close this box and exit the group.
reopen the group and it should download fresh -- the number of headers you
have specified in your options.

Right click the group again and click find. In the open box type a key word
from the subject line of your message in the subject search blank.

See reply below:

<snip>

If you are using Outlook Express as your news reader it is easy to find your post again. Click on the newsgroup that the post was made in such as ' microsoft.public.windowsxp.general'

All current headers will download, then on the top task bar click on View/Current View/Show Replies to my Messages and all the posts that you have made in that newsgroup will be showing with hopefully some answers.

Once you have finished looking at responses to your post revert back to regular view by clicking on View/Current View/unclick Show Replies to my Messages and all posts will again be showing to you.

If you are not using Outlook as your newsreader:

"Using the web based access to newsgroups is a very difficult way to use high volume newsgroups like the XP newsgroups. With several XP newsgroups average daily volume well over 1000 messages, the web formats lack of the search ability severely limits the usefulness of the newsgroups forum.

Below are steps and tips on setting up the Outlook Express Newsreader for viewing and posting to the Microsoft newsgroups."

Often happens to me that ISP doesn't update newsgroup server and I get
answers before I've seen my original message.
Google is faster and easier to search than Outlook express I find:

First, stop using Outlook Express and get a free Usenet client like
Super Gravity, then set your viewer to show ONLY UNREAD ARTICLES, sort
they by subject (called thread), and then you will only see the new
articles, once since you last read/marked the group as read. Sure, that
means you'll see 400 messages per day, but you can also quickly scan
down to the thread that you started.

First of all, since you're using Outlook Express, go to Tools | Options, and
on the Options tab, uncheck the box "Get nnnn messages at a time." That's
probably keeping you from getting all the messages in this very busy
newsgroup.

Second, to find your old message and any answers it has received, go to the
Googlegroups Advanced Search page at
http://www.google.com/advanced_search?q=googlegroups&hl=en&lr= and look for
your message there.

(3) Where might I find a good source of information concerning how to
use this news group more effectively?

Ask questions here, if you have them.

(4) Could I do this from the
web?

Yes, but that's the slowest, clunkiest, most error-prone method there is.
Outlook Express, which you are using, works much better and more easily, and
is greatly preferable. There are also other newsreaders available. Although
some prefer other newsreaders, having tried several of them, I personally
like Outlook Express the best.

(5) Must the microsoft.public.windowsxp.general folder check
messages every time you clcik it? (If not, I think I might be able to
contrive a way of seeing my message before its swept away by the
latest wave of messages. ...Too hard all the same.)

Messages don't get swept away by new ones. Once downloaded, they will stay
on your computer until you get rid of them. I personally prefer to hide
already-read messages (once I've read them, keeping them around just
clutters up my newsreader), and then delete the old ones every few days, but
others work differently.
