I can't connect to my server

I'm trying to set up e-mail on my new computer and Windows Security will not
let me log on to my mail server.

I have set up my account according to the info in my previous Outlook
Express Account including POP3 server SMTP server etc and input mu user name
and password. However, when I try to send and receive and input the User
Name and Password (they do match those in the Account Settings ... I've
typed them so slowly you just wouldn't believe) the windows security window
just keeps popping up asking me to enter my User name and Password. I'm
having a horrible Vista groundhog day ..... AAAAAAaaaaghggghhhhh!

Would somebody please help me .... ?????

Sounds like there are settings which you have missed. Consider calling your
mail provider to ask for a mail setup walkthrough..

Mike,

Thanks for the reply. Doesn't seem logical that it's a mail server error -
I'm getting a Windows Security message - I don't think I'm even getting to
the mail server. I've copied across everything that was in my Outlook
properties and there appear to be no further fields to input in the Vista
Tools/Accounts Wizard. I'm flummoxed!!

Is Windows Security just saying 'NO' or is there an error message or some
other clue? a screen shot of the Windows Security warning would be good..

When you get that prompt for username and password, click Cancel.
That should bring up an error message. Right-click on your error message,
copy, then paste it into a reply here.

Gary,

Thanks for looking into this ... had to step away for a couple of days
because it was driving me mad and have had trouble responding to the group.
I have included the text of the error message ... hope this helps and sheds
some light ...

Thanks for taking the time & trouble to answer.

I don't know anything about your ISP ( 1and1.co.uk ), but since you are
using Windows Mail, the following might help :
Tools > Accounts > highlight your account > Properties > Servers. UN-check
the box that says " Log on using secure password authentication " > OK
Hope this will help.

It means that your username/password login is not being accepted.
You can test your password by logging in to your provider's webmail.
If that works, it proves you have the correct username and password.
A likely reason for the username/password failing is account corruption.
One thing you should try as a possible quick fix is to delete that corrupted
mail account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that account.

If that doesn't fix it, more drastic measures will have to be taken.
Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:
