Currently I'm running IE 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633
Update Versions: SP1, Q330994, Q822925, Q824145, Q832894
I went to use IE yesterday and I got an error:
Inernet Explorer could not open the search page.
click OK and I get a full page saying that the page may not be
there and to check my connection settings....
I'm running XP home on an e-Machine and have run several of
the MS updates to both XP and IE installed. I have a wireless
LAN using, a linksys wireless router/hub and remote
transceiver
- uses a usb port. Currently I'm not running a firewall like
ZoneAlarm, as my wireless router acts as a firewall (I think).
I have Norton Antivirus and it is up to date. I've run a
complete
Virus Scann and no virus found.
I think the problem started after I ran Ad-aware 6.0 to fix a
problem of my disk activity light staying on all the time.
Some
spyware program doing something behind the sceens.
I usually use Netscape 7.1. I can access the network with
Netscape, WS-FTP, and Eudora email. Just NOT with IE.
I've spent several hours reading the various files in the
Knowledge
Base to no avail. One file was saying that I needed to have
a wsock file in the Windows directory a couple of wsock.VXD
files
in the windows/system32 directory. None of those files
were there.
I searched my system and found the wsock.dll in system32
vis windows
directory but could not find the vxd files. However this
article
also infered it was for 95 or something.
I've looked all through the IE, Tools, Internet Options for
some
hint to the problem but not had much success.
As I said I CAN get to the internet with all my other
applications
just not IE. I tried to download the latest SP with
Netscape, but
MS said I have to be running IE. So I couldn't down load
the update.
What I've tried:
The scanned your system for the possibility of
unknown\unwanted
spyware or parasites which is what I think caused the problem.
Mike Burgess [MVP Windows Shell\User] sent me some info and
pointed me to:
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware, Parasites, Toolbars and
Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
I went through the items there and led to the following
items from
Microsoft's knowledge base that I've also done :
"The Page Cannot Be Displayed" Error Message (XP)

I wnet to:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm and downloaded their
tool to Repairs Winsock 2 settings - LSP-Fix
from
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
Then from there he mentioned:
http://members.shaw.ca/techcd/WinsockXPFix.exe - Winsock
repair
utility designed for Windows XP.
Which again did nothing to help.
Anyone have any more ideas?
TIA
John
