Can't browse thru IE 6

I went from dial up to cable internet. When I uninstalled my dial up, I lost
my ability to browse in IE. I pinged several urls and got a response. I can
update my security because I don't go thru the browser. I get the "Page
can't be found error." I have two other computers connected to the Internet
via router and they both work. I have tried to reinstall or repair Wuindows
XP to resolve the problem (article 3183780. It didn't work. I downloaded IE
from Microsoft and tried to install it but i got a "newer version is already
installed" message. Trying to do a system restore to an earlier date didn't
help either. Any suggestions?

Hi ProfDon :)

You don't mention the version of Windows you are using, but, try the
following and see if it helps:

As you are no longer on a dial-up, unless you need a Proxy for some reason,
be sure that your Proxy settings are been disabled.

Disable Proxy Settings
Tools>Internet Options> Connections tab> LAN Settings button
Under "Use a Proxy server, make sure the box there is unchecked
or
Lan Settings- Proxy Server - Disable
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/proxyenableundo.reg

Also...Uncheck the *Automatically detect settings* in the LAN Settings for
the Internet Options if it is checked.

Do you use the Outlook Express as your email program? There are settings in
OE for connections that also work in conjunction with IE.

Hope this helps.

Hi ProfDon,

I have the same problem and tried your suggestions with no success, I have
Windows XP and IE 6 will not work, but through AOL I can access the internet.
I did a system restore and IE 6 started to work, but when I installed new
programs on my new computer it stopped working again.

Thanks,

Steve

Hi Jan,

I installed Netscape and Firefox, both work without AOL, all internet
applications work except for IE6. At first I never thought to install other
browsers. If you have any other ideas for making IE6 work I would appreciate
it, if not thanks so much for you help.

Best regards,

Steve
