I have a similar problem. I get an IP address but it is
not within the range of valid IP addresses from my DHCP
server. This happens frequently - whenever I make major
changes to my networking setups. For example, I took my
laptop to a client's site. They do not use DHCP so I had
to get an IP address, subnet mask, gateway, DNS, etc from
them to connect. That was on my LAN adaptor. Now, I am
at home and trying to use DHCP with my wireless adaptor.
I get a 165.254.150.xxx ip address with a subnet of
255.255.0.0. My DHCP server starts 120.xxx.xxx.xxx. It
happens on all my computers running XP. And, I cannot
even connect to anything via the modem! Normally, I do a
system restore to prior to making the changes and DHCP
starts working again, but this time, it is not. Does
anyone know what causes this? Is anyone else having this
problem? It is VERY annoying!

FYI, I just downloaded winsockfix from a site suggested
later in this forum and it fixed the problem. I am
really surprised this issue hasn't been resolved in an XP
patch, and that I have searched for months on the
Microsoft Support Knowlegebase and never seen anything
about this problem that seems to plague so many people.

Steve,

the cause is fixed in an XP patch, namely Service Pack 2, but
since XP itself is not at fault, there is really nothing to fix.
SP2 even has a new command to fix the Winsock quickly.

The cause is that the computer got hijacked by adware or spyware
because the user connected it to the Internet without adequate
protection.

If any of these problems crops up again, please have a look at
http://www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm.
