I can not close Word, or Log out

I am on XP w/ SP2

I launched Word. I can not force it to quit. the close box does not work.
Nothing associated with it responds. I tried to restart the computer but I
can not. I can still use Explorer and other programs.

I am a Mac person. We have a force quit command. there must be some kind of
equivalent command on windows. what is it, please?
