I can no longer generate the UK currency symbol..

It's a US PC, with a US keyboard. I use it in the UK now and have set my
regional setting accordingly. My problem now is that I can't seem to
generate the UK pound sign using ALT 0163, any suggestions why not?

Are you using the numeric keypad for 0163?

It is possible that the character set you are using has got changed to
one that does not include it at that point, eg Unicode

Have you tried using the character map, it is listed there?
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Character Map
