i am getting ghost characters how do i shut off?

every time i try typing i have a character visible even spaces are coming up
as . and enters are coming up as the paragraph symbol. i dont know how this
turned on but it is really annoying. can anyone help?
 
Just click on the pilcrow (paragraph symbol) on your toolbar to turn it off.
Alternatively, you can click on Tools | Options | View | Formatting Marks
and deselect there.
 
Or CTRL+* will toggle it and is probably how it was accidentally activated
in the first place.
