Hyperlinks in a Protected doc

How can I both protect a document from changes while allowing use of hyperlinks in that document at the same time?

I need to protect a manual that I created and posted on our shared drive. Once protected, hyperlinks will not work.

When unprotected, and I choose "recommend ready only" box under Save As, Tools, General Options , the hyperlinks will work but the user receives a pop up box asking if they want to open as read only or not. If they choose "no" they have access to make changes.
