Hyperlink

I have a question regarding hyperlinks, we have an external IT Department
where all of our files are stored, I have a Access 2003 database with a SQL
2000 back-end, previously I was using embedded files, but for some mysterious
reason all of the embedded documents were missing, so I changed over to all
hyperlinks (linking to documents and records in the same directory as the
database in specified file folders) and don't store any of my records and
documents in the database, because of the fear of loosing them again.

On to my question, I have had several of my electronic files come up missing,
most that have not been changed in quite some time, only re-affirmed. The
solutions that I receive are that this could have happened during our change
over to a new server, which I can totally agree with and the second solution
is the database is deleting these out of electronic files they are
hyperlinked to, I don't see that this could be a problem, they are not
embedded, only linked, the access record is still in the database, it has not
been deleted. I am looking to see if anyone thinks this could be a real issue
or if I am correct that this could not be possible.

Lastly their last solution is to switch to SharePoint Services, which also
requires our company to upgrade to 2007, which I think at this point would be
more costs and be the third time that I have had to change my database, the
first was from Access MDB to Access ADP, because this was supposed to
eleviate my problems, which in return have not.

If anyone has any suggestions or comments, please let me know.

Thanks!
