hyperlink syntax

Have table with a hyperlink column. In Form based on this table, user
creates/enters a hyperlink value by putting their cursor in the blank field,
right click to hyperlink, select 'Edit Hyperlink', and then browses to image
file.

In the simple case where the photo is on the c: of the user:

Sometimes the syntax of the link is: ../../../../foldername/filename.jpg

Sometime the syntax is: c:/foldername/filename.jpg

Even when it is the latter, if you float your cursor on the hyperlink the
little info box that opens is showing it at ../../../../etc.

I see in the EditHyperlink Window that one has the address field at bottom
and another 'text to display' field at top.

My general question is why/where does this ../../../ come from and what does
it mean? Would like better understanding.

And then the real issue - the text to display field is important because in
a long path the only thing visible is the left side beginning portion with
these ../../../../ so that the user is not able to the meaningful folder/file
name easily. Thus one must manually set the 'text to display' field during
the edit hyperlink set up, and user's are bound to forget. Is there any fast
or alternative method?

Would welcome advice from someone who has set up alot of hyperlink fields to
help me get up to speed on this. thanks in advance.
