hyperlink opens a template

Despite guidance from Microsoft's Q278627 (entitled: WD2000: Word Template
Hyperlink Is Opened Instead of New Document), I have been unable to establish
a hyperlink to a template (or a link to a shortcut of a template) which opens
a new document. Each time i try it either open the template or it returns the
following error message: "cannot open specified file".

Any suggestions/help out there?

My personal workaround for this is to wrap the online template in a
zip and link to the zip with instructions to double-click the
contained file.
