Hyperlink formula appearing but not actual hyperlink

I am using xl2002. I want to create multiple hyperlinks to one file. I have put the file address in cell E7 and the friendly name in F7 and tried to use the formula:
=HYPERLINK(E7, F7)

This worked fine in a blank spreadsheet, but not in the real spreadsheet where I needed it to. The real spreadsheet is very large, containing over 300 rows. The cell shows the text of the formula (=HYPERLINK(E7, F7)) instead of showing the friendly name as a hyperlink.

Does anyone have a clue about why this is occuring? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Danielle

What's the "number format" of the cell wher you put the formula in?

Activate the formula cell, change its format to General, go to the Formula
Bar, and hit F2.
