HW Upgrade on Win XP Pro, SP2

Hi all.

This is possibly a dumb question, but I want my upgrade to go
smoothly, so here goes.

My current rig has a no-name 52x CD-ROM + an LG CD-RW/DVD-ROM
combi. I'm running Win XP Pro, SP2.

The DVD-ROM is on the fritz, so I decided to replace both the
CD-ROM & the DVD-ROM at once - prices have dropped so much
lately, I couldn't resist. I got a Samsung CD-RW/DVD-ROM combi +
a Samsung DVD-RW.

Now, do I have to "remove" these devices from the device manager
before swapping over, or do I just do the swap and let the new
hardware be found? Any other pitfalls I should be aware of?

Best,

Vic.

Hi,

You don't need to worry about windows at all. Just take the old drives out,
replace them with the new ones and windows will see the change in hardware
and update it's self automatically.

The only thing you do need to take care about are the jumper settings on the
drives. If you're not sure what you're doing then just use the exact same
settings as the drives they are replacing.. i.e if the dvd drive you pull
out is set to 'master' then put the drive to 'master' which is replacing
it..

You should have no problems at all! But if you do.. you know where we
are ;-)

Simon

Thanks for those reassuring words Simon.

Re: The master/slave settings. IIRC, Both drives are on cable select,
so no probs there.

I'll be doing the swap next weekend with a little more confidence now.
