When I check the local area connection status window,it
shows me trillons (e.g. 14525579407410) of bytes
under "Sent" category as compared to only few KB/MB (e.g.
comapred to sent - 40514). This keeps on increasing from
the minute I am connected to network. Please help me -
first to understand what kind of data it's sending and
second, how to confugure these settings (as I would like
to be the decision making authority for data being sent
from my laptop).
Thanks for all the help!

First things:

a) Make sure your firewall is enabled, or you have a third party one (the
latter is generally preferred as the built-in XP firewall doesn't block
*any* outbound traffic). ZoneAlarm and Sygate both offer free firewalls....
b) Run a full scan with your updated antivirus software to look for viruses
& trojans - if you don't have AV software, get some ASAP. Also can get a
second opinion here: http://housecall.antivirus.com
c) Scan for spyware/adware with AdAware (www.lavasoft.de) and/or Spybot
(http://security.kolla.de)
