Hi,

I'm running into a very strange problem here.

I have a 20 GB "C:" partition for my OS, and other partitions on a RAID0
array. I noticed when I started Diskeeper8 that there was a huge new red
(fragmented) file. I just found 5 GB of new data on my system partition and
I tracked the incorrect file/folder.

Apparently, the C:\Documents and Settings\MYNAME\Local Settings\History
folder is empty, but still fills about 5 GB of space. I have run chkdsk on
boot and no errors are found.

The folder is protected and I cannot delete it. What should I do ???
Export my settings, delete my account, recreate an account and import my
settings ? Any easier way to free those 5 GB ???

Any help appreciated

Sorry, of course running up-to-date antivirus and firewall, system restore
and useless services turned off.

Hidden files and folders displayed, the History folder is emptied from the
IE6 options tab and also directly.

I hope I provided all the details this time, sorry for the double post.

Never seen this before?

You can use the built-in system administrator account to delete the contents
of that folder.

To log on to XP using the built-in System Administrator account will depend
on which version of XP is installed.

For XP Pro, when you see the log on screen, press CTRL+ALT+DEL twice to
reveal the System Administrator account. Select this account and press
ENTER.

For XP Home, you will need to go to Safe Mode. Reboot the system and when
the computer first starts to initialize, start pressing the F8 key rapidly
until you see the black screen menu. Select Safe Mode using the Arrow keys
and Press ENTER. You will see the System Administrator account, press ENTER
to log on.

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the C:\Documents and
Settings\MYNAME\Local Settings\History folder and delete the contents of
this folder.

Using the pro version.
I did as you said, and this time and index.dat file with a size of 4.94 GB
was successfully deleted.
I wonder what caused this... but thank you anyway for the very prompt help
))
