Something to do with HP Printers because it lives in C:\Program
Files\HP\hpcoretech.

But how essential is it?

Reason: Frequently when I go to shut down, this thing is a
show-stopper. Gotta manually kill it via TaskMan before the
shutdown will proceed.

My kneejerk is to find out where it's getting started and remedy
that...

But I don't want to find something out the hard way...

Look in MSCONFIG and disable it for testing. If things go south
"UNdisable" it.

Thanks. Didn't think to do that. I don't consider myself
lazy... probably just dumb...

But reading between the lines of that page, it sounds like maybe
that thing's sole purpose in life is to monitor the ink usage on
my HP inkjet.

I think I'll try just disabling it and see what pops.
I had the same problem for a couple weeks now and downloaded the
software from above site, installed it and no more problem.

I didn't mean to imply either--sometimes a nudge in the right direction will
enable people to try and troubleshoot the same way the regulars do.
