Using HP4540 & XP home.
Was working fine until thunderstorm last night. Now won't boot up. Sounds
like HD makes a few clicks, than stops. Only way to shut down is to unplug.
When plug back in, even afer extended wait, fan and HD start right up. HD
cllicks few times than stops. Discovered if hold start stwich in when plug
unit in, unit will shut down in few seconds. When restarted, same problem.

Do I have power supply problems, or is it a software problem. Any ideas will
be appericated.

Download a drive diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's
web site. That creates a floppy disk from which you run the
diagnostics. That will determnine if it's a hard drive failure.
