While trying to figure out a CD R/W problem, I elected to do a system restore
using the Hewlet Packard PC Doctor which was pre-installed when I bought the
computer.
My computer had gradually been running slower and slower over time and even
running a defrag didn't help much. I also run Adware 6 fairly often etc.
Anyway....
Once the system restore was complete, I could not access MS Office program.
I attempted to reload program but was told that Service Pack 2 needed to be
installed. So I can't access Publisher or Excel, etc.
When I went to the Windows Update screen, normally I can elect to run a scan
for updates, but this time the screen is blank and I am blocked from
reviewing my update log there. So, after hours of seraching etc, and after
waiting for the Automatic Update, I could not access the SP2 download and it
was not delivered by the Automatic Update from Microsoft.
I contacted the Windows Support team and am working with them now. I was
sent a link for an SP2 download and was told to try this in SAFE mode. I
OPENed the update rather than SAVEd it, then restarted my PC in SAFE mode,
but was unable to find the SP2 update, so I restarted my PC in normal mode
and downloaded the update again in the SAVE option.
Once it was SAVEd, I clicked OPEN and installed SP2 in normal mode.
Everything looked successful until I got to the finish and had to restart my
computer.
I got a repeating screen that said Windows XP could not be opened and I
could go to SAFE mode to reset my computer to a restore point.
I did this and restored the PC to the pre-SP2 install point. So, now I am
back to where I started after doing the system restore.
I guess there is a difference between the Windows system restore and the
Hewlet Packard system restore. the HP version resets the programs to factory
settings, but supposedly saves my documents and photos etc. I can't read my
Ecxel or Publisher documents, and I need to reload all my other programs that
did not come factory installed like Picture It , etc.
I'm awaiting the Windows Support team reply to these developements. I
suspect that most of my problem may be that somehow my XP registry got
deleted during the system restore since I used the manufacturers program
instead of the internal Windows XP system restore. Would this explain why I
can't access any updates on the web? Is my problem unique or can this be
readily resolved by some of you savvy people here?
All replies much appreciated,
