HP psc 1350 all-in-one install problems on XP Home edition

I am having some problems getting our hp psc 1350 printer working. We
are trying to install on a Compaq Presario 5000.

While following the installation instructions, we get a big red X when
we reach the step when the computer should try to connect to the
printer. The software seems to install, but I have a feeling some
errors are occurring, but the software isn't able to display them to
us due to some dialogs being suppressed. The following messages (all
with Event ID 267 and Event Source PlugPlayManager) appear in the
System Event Log:

Client side device installation was not performed for
"DOT4PRT\Vid_03f0&Pid_3b11&MI_02&DOT4&PRINT_HPZ\9&11fa5cf8&0&1"
because all user-interface dialogs have been suppressed.

Client side device installation was not performed for
"USBPRINT\hppsc_1300_series\7&23e20301&0&USB001" because all
user-interface dialogs have been suppressed.

We are also occasionally receiving this error (Event ID 269, same
Event Source):
Did not prompt a user for reboot because all user-interface dialogs
have been suppressed.

Has anyone else been seeing these errors in relation to the hp psc
1350?

The printer shows up in the Printers and Faxes control panel no matter
which USB port we plug into and it appears that it can be brought
online and offline, but printing a test page doesn't work. The test
page prints from the printer when we load the ink cartridges. We can
also print a test page when we hold down the Cancel button and press
Color - Start Copy. When we try to print from notepad, wordpad, or
the command line, the document pops into the print queue, shows
"Spooling", and then disappears without printing. Occasionally it
goes into the print queue and then sits there with an error message.
I have only seen that error one time and I haven't been abel to
recreate it to post here.

We know the usb ports are all functional because the computer appears
in "Printers and Faxes" no matter which port we attach the cord to.

Also, Norton Internet Security is installed on this computer, but we
get the same errors whether it is enabled or disabled.

Any hints, tips, etc?

Thanks,
Rick

Many thanks for the pointer Rich. Unfortunately, it seems that the
computer we are installing this on (Compaq Presario 5000) is in
"Factory Mode" and seems to be suppressing error messages. The event
log messages that lead me to think this are the following:

Client side device installation was not performed for
"DOT4PRT\Vid_03f0&Pid_3b11&MI_02&DOT4&PRINT_HPZ\9&11fa5cf8&0&1"
because all user-interface dialogs have been suppressed.

Client side device installation was not performed for
"USBPRINT\hppsc_1300_series\7&23e20301&0&USB001" because all
user-interface dialogs have been suppressed.

I think the solution will be found once I can see the "user-interface
dialogs" that are being suppressed. Any hints about other modes that
might be available other than "factory mode"?

Thanks,
Rick
