HP Photosmart 7350 "Your printer is not responding"

Having trouble getting the 7350 to stay connected if I power down the
printer when the PC is still on or if I leave the printer on and power
the PC off. The printer Icon for the 7350 in the Systray shows a grey
rectangle with a red X in it. After I disconnected the USB cable and
power cable and reconnected them, the red X would go away. What I found
was that if I kept the printer off until Win98SE boots up, then turn it
on, power the PC off and then power the 7350 off, I would never get the
disconnected message...... most of the time.

HP's troubleshooting notes from their last few 7350 driver updates say:

1.1 Unable to re-establish connection between PC and printer after
printer is turned off using the printer's power button.

Solution: Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer for

10 seconds, reconnect the power cord then turn printer on using
power
button. If this still doesn't work, disconnect the power cord from
the back of the printer, and restart the PC. After the PC has
finished booting reconnect the power cord to the printer and power
it
up.

But unless I unplug, power PC back on, then replug USB and power
connection, I can't get the PC to recognize the device.

So what's happening here? Bought the 7350 Jan of last year (03), but
haven't used it, plus there's no Best Buy out where we're at to exchange
it. Looking at other threads for the 7350 with similar problems, may not
have been a bad batch of printers, but then again...

Any possible solutions other than unplugging/ reconnecting the device?

Thanks

Go to Device Manager and under your Universal serial bus controllers and
right click on all of the root hubs and select properties and power
management tab and uncheck allow the computer to turn off this device to
save power and that will fix your problem.

Gary,
I'm running Win98SE, not Win XP. Also, would the same properties show up
for a HP 2200 color printer? Does the 7350 have a power setting option in
it's (Not Windows) set up from the front panel of the printer?

I saw your other replies to those with WinXP and looked at the properties
for the root hubs. But Win98 doesn't show that.

Thanks

I'll try, but based on other's attempts at tech support, I won't hold my
breathe...
Thanks though

I had the same problem with a 7350, with the additional problem that the
printer would just SHUT DOWN after 1 or 2 hours of non-use.

It THEN wouldn't wake up no matter what I did (power switch did NOTHING)
unless I pulled the power line out of the back and put it back in.

My call to HP tech support went smoothly, and they told me I should
return the printer for exchange.

Well (long story made shorter) I didn't return it as I needed it daily
for at least 2 weeks (made some nice cash with the pictures from it) and
I just kept it NEAR me at the workstation and unplugged it once in a
while for ten seconds.

So if your printer is within warrantee, contact HP and get an RMA, if
NOT in warrantee live with it.

I would suggest, up grading to Win-2k if not xp-home or pro. They BOTH
work MUCH better with USB.

Thanks, Larry. I really think it might be multiple things like S/W conflict as
even with the printer turned off the Print icon in the SysTray would get a red
X in the box once in a while. I have Win98se on another machine with a HP 2210
printer and after I removed the OfotoNow driver, there's no conflict with who
comes up for control of the printer and the device works great ALL the time.
Since it's my daughter's printer that's not working, it's too far to drop by
to fix it. So will have to try working issue over the phone.... fun....

The web page HP gave me,
http://h20015.www2.hp.com/hub_search/document.jhtml?lc=en&docName=bpy20917

didn't shed any light on things as these are the things I checked already with
the exception of apps that are loaded at Windows start up.
If you have any other ideas let me know as it's worth trying.

In this case I may have to return my HP PhotoSmart 7350 for the fixed
version myself <g>. I have the similar problem, but I don't use it oftento
time how long it takes to cause the problem, but I too have to unplug the
power line and put it back in for it to work.

I wouldn't care to exchange for newer one myself and it doesn't take long
to unplug and put the power-line back in so I never called the tect for
help.
