I need help with a machine that had Cleanup 4.52 run on it and the
drivers for the CD drive disappeared. It's an HP Pavilion XT983, had
Cleanup 4.52 run on it one time and BAM - no more 'D' drive which was
the CD reader (doesn't show now when you click 'my computer' - 'D'
drive as disappeared). Anyone have any ideas on re-establishing the
'D' drive?

Thanks for any help - much appreciated.

John

ps - Steven Gould's cleanup is a great utility btw, but I don't know
that I'd advocate anything above 4.0 after witnessing this.

Two possibilities come to mind:
1. Cleanup deleted an important Registry key
2. Your CD drive coincidentally died at the same moment you used Cleanup.
Does the BIOS detect the CD drive?

I am not sure this will work for you but it is better than nothing. I
had this problem with a computer. I went to contorl panel,
administrative tools, computer management, and in the device manager,
expand the dvd/cd rom and see if there is anything there. Most likely
you will have you D drive with a yellow icon. Try double clicking on it
and make sure that under the general tab the device usage is enabled.
If there is a problem trouble shoot the problem until it ask you to
reninstall the driver. The best way to do it is to go to microsoft
website and find the manufacturer of your D drive. If after clicking on
the dvd/cd drives icons there is no drive check try checking for
hardware changes and then install the driver, indicate the program
where the get the driver from and you should be goog to go.
