driver-caused crashes

My HP Pavilion 732c has worked well except for one major law--the first time
(and many times since) that I tried to access a disk (brand-new,
unformatted) in the CD/DVD-RW drive (Drive E on my machine), WINDOWS
crashed. Each time this happens, Microsoft sends me a message that a driver
(which driver they cannot identify) has caused the malfunction. I figure it
must be the driver for the two CD/DVD drives, but HP insists (after scanning
my machine) that all of the drivers are up-to-date. HP online helpers do not
recognize the problem, which makes me think that it is not universal or even
common, but it is very annoying to me. After one of these crashes, one or
both of the CD/DVD drives is essentially inoperative (cannot be accessed
from the MYCOMPUTER screen) until I shut the machine down, do a chkdsk/f,
and restart the machine. Has somebody else out there had this problem and
solved it? Any help would be appreciated.

What does HP say about the problem?

access a disk (brand-new, unformatted) ?? Do you mean a blank cd?

Have you used software from nero for example that 'formats' a cd to be used
like a floppy?

I encountered a similar problem just recently..every time a cd/dvd was
inserted into the computer, it would lock up and crash... After
troubleshooting and noticing it would not recognize bootable cds... it was
actually a faulty cd/dvd drive. After replacing the drive, problem went away.
