HP Laserjet 1200 "hppadt40.exe problem"

Hi --

This is regarding a HP Laserjet 1200 connected directly to a Dell Dimension
via LPT1 parallel port. The operating system is Win98SE.

The computer was "sick" with some sort of viruses and a bunch of spyware,
adware, etc. but everything has been cleaned off; Win98SE was reinstalled
and the computer is generally working well, except for the printer.

Each time you attempt to print, an error message appears indicating
something like "Unable to start hppadt40.exe driver." I've tried both the
pcl5 and pcl6 drivers posted for this printer, have completely deleted the
old printer files when prompted to do so and have reinstalled fresh but the
problem persists. Have searched both google.com and the hp website but found
nothing helpful.

Suggestions, anyone?

Thanks.

Delete any file begining with "hp" in windows system folder after you remove
the driver. This way you can remove totaly the old driver. Then, try
reinstalling the driver.
For any accidental deletion of a not HP file, keep the files in another
folder as backup.

Thanks, Yianni, but it turns out that there wasn't really anything missing
after all.

It seems that when drivers are installed, the features of scanning and
faxing are enabled, whether or not that optional hardware is present. In
order to make printing work, you have to go into Properties and disable
bi-directional communication. One simple uncheck and everything is good
again.

Appreciate your response.
