someone is offering me a local deal (I'm in canada) for this printer. no
toner, pagecount maybe one toner's worth so I guess around 3000 pages.

its $50CAN, 40US.. and I plan to take it. I figure I can buy a toner for
30-50US (worst case) on ebay.

now being new to printers, and laser printers especially, I read on some
sites that shelf life of this toner (maybe many other laser toners too) is 1
year. so my question is: what does it mean? does this mean if its factory
sealed in a little bag (I assume toners are sealed like this just link ink
catridges) then it can stay sealed like this for about 1 year? what
happens once its opened and say put into the printer. does this mean I have
1 year (I know its approximate) to use up all the toner???

thanks for your comments.

I don't know about the 1000 but I doubt that is is
any different from any other laser printer. The
toner tends to settle after a period of just
sitting, so you need to take the cartridge out and
shake end to end especially with heavy usage and
when it is nearly empty, but I don't think it goes
bad. My HP 4L doesn't get used much anymore since
I hooked to my wifes computer-- maybe a page in
some months up to 25-30 pages in some months. The
last cartridge I bought was at least 4 years ago
and I have never shaken it.

I don't think you need to worry about shelf life.
BTW, the toner cartridge for my HP 4L cost about
$65 at Staples

thank you a whole lot for your time and advice. much appreciated.
believe it or not, and I cannot believe it myself, while negotiating the
purchase of that printer for $50, I received an unexpected reply from seller
that item is sold.

however, I still believe this printer is a good choice for me, and the price
range is affordable, plus I am hearing what I wanted to hear about toners in
general from you,so I'm going to pursue a search for this model on ebay, or
maybe locally if I'm lucky.

again, I'm fairly new to laser printers so maybe there are better models
than the hp 1000 that can be bought used for $100 or so. this was the
first laser printer I saw priced so low.

thanks!

Used? $100? I bought my HP1000 new for that price about 2 years ago. New
lasers can be bought as cheap as $52 (that's the lowest I have seen) on the
net. Use dealnews.com or similar site and wait for bargains.
