HP Laserjet 1000--just quit

My HP Laserjet 1000 just quit. It worked up till about a couple of
weeks ago. It doesn't give me any error messages and the yellow
light doesn't flash. ... nothing.

My print program says it is printing. The toner cartridge is a couple
of years old, but I would have thought the yellow light or something
would tell me if it was out. Besides the last page it printed was
perfect.

I've tried reinstalling it a half dozen times.

Thanks
Bill

I guess we need a little more information...
Does the printer go through the motions of printing, ie does it feed paper?
Are either of the lights on (this printer has an unusual interface and if the
lights are both off that is a clue)?
Does the PC report the print job as complete?
Also have you tried the engine test, from memory it is just below the interface
connector, small button recessed in the case, push it with a non metallic
object. This should print either a completely blank page or a page full of
horizontal black lines (depends on the formatter model)?

Sorry Bill, should read...

horizontal black lines (depends on the formatter model)? Note black page, not
blank page.

The green power light is on. Otherwise the printer is dead. No sound or
movement. The print module reports printing job but doesn't report
complete after waiting a couple of minutes or more. It's the fact that
the power light is on, everything is connected & installed & yet the
printer just acts dead that I don't understand.
I'm going to try that button you talked about. Is it that little slot
underneath the printer interface? I didn't even know it existed. I'll try
it & see what happens.

Firstly the fact that the green light is on indicates that the USB pod is
"probably" OK, the lights on this printer require a properly connected pod to
operate.
Yes the button is recessed in that little slot, you should see it, might need a
torch.
If the engine test works then the problem is most likely the formatter board in
the printer or the USB pod.
Please let me know how you get on. You could eliminate the possibility of some
strange OS or driver problem by installing the printer on a friend's PC if that
can be arranged.
