HP ink cartridges

My HP PSC 1209 came with #27 (black), and #28 (color) ink. It can also
use the #56 (black), and the #57 (color) inks. These compatible
cartridges are all listed on the box. Curiously, the book doesn't list
the #27 as compatible, even tho it's shipped with the printer! All of
these inks are readily available.

On the other hand....

Other HP printers come with the #27 and #28 with no mention of the #56
and #57 being compatible, but I suspect that they will work just the
same. The #56 and #57 have lots more ink, and don't cost much more. Does
anyone know for sure about this? HP may be trying to steer customers
away from the more economical cartridges!

Looks like a replay of the #15/#17 idiocy (they were half-full
versions of the #45 and #78). It's possible some bottom-end printers may
only support the 27/28, as there is probably some minor electrical
difference so it can tell.

#27, #28 can be used in any hp printer accepting the #27, #28, #56, #57.
#56, #57 can't fit on cheaper models that accept only #27, #28 cartridges.

HP27 = 10ml ($16.49 at Amazon.com, and $17.99 at CompUSA.com)
HP56 = 19ml ($17.94 at Amazon.com and $19.99 at CompUSA.com)

or on average...

HP27 gives approx $1.7 per ml
HP56 gines approx $1 per ml

You might be able to find cheaper sources but I know which cart I'd buy if
both worked in my printer

I have a HP 3550 which uses #27,#28.
I also have a HP 5160 which uses #56, #57,#58.

I use the #27,#28 cartridges to cycle thru 3 cartridges to have the
refilled cartridges show full.

The #56 &#57 are not recignised by the 3550, so my experience is the
same as stated.

The advantage I have is that the same ink refills both sets of
cartridges
