HP error Print cartrdige (2) missing or not detected.

I have a HP Photosmart D5360
I have been intermittently getting the above message for some time.I
have removed and replaced the cartridges several times. Sometime after
that it has worked for a few hours or days.
Replacing with new cartridges made no difference nor did uninstalling
and reinstalling drivers and software.
The question has been much asked by Google users who got no help from HP
without any solutions.
I notice that the question was asked on this group sometime ago without
any answer.
TIA

Hi Derek!

Take a closer look at the contact-pins for the cartridge
on the printer side.
On some HPs they tend to get a little dirty over the time,
which can result in such behaviour.
Maybe cleaning with a lint free cloth will help.
On the other hand, I had a couple of defective cartriges with
photosmarts (not exactly this model) in my area too.
Could it be that the "springs" for the pins are wearing out over time,
so that full contact can be achieved with brand-new
cartridges only? (No refills, neither HP nor 3rd party).
Look at the contact area on the cartridges, they do look worn
on some of them, even HPs.

I always use refills or third party ones. There was sticky ink in the
cavities under the cartridges. I pushed a piece of cloth into the area
to absorb as much as I could. I put the new cartridges in and it worked.
Then replaced them with the earlier ones and it still worked.
A Canon printer I had did have a tank underneath where excess ink went.
If it filled up it evidently had to be emptied by a service agent.
Does the Pohotosmart D5360 printer have this?

After my fiddling around it went OK for 24 hours and then the same error
message. Removing replacing the cartridges produced contradictory
messages as to whether it was one of the cartridges that was missing or
both.
I went back to the new ones I had tried on Sunday and was told that the
cartridges were incompatible. After removing them/replacing them a few
times it eventually accepted them. Since then it has produced twenty
good copies. However, enough is enough with wasting time on it and
getting inky fingers:) It is time to surrender and get a replacement.
