hp deskjet printer problem

My HP Deskjet 720c printer worked great with Win 98. However, since installing Win XP the colors no longer print correctly. In fact, grayscale now prints pinkscale. I've run the HP online diagnostic test and it says I have the most current driver installed and everything is right. Obviously something isn't. I've tried everything I can think of. Has anyone else had this problem? Can someone PULEEZE suggest a solution? I'm sure it's something simple, but HP apparently offers no customer support for the 700 series of Deskjet (at least it's not listed in their menu options). Without going into that saga, let me just say I'm extremely frustrated at this point and would be very appreciative of any help I can get

Thanks
Carol

Hi Carol,

Sounds like your either running out of one or more colours or there is some
blockage in the ink cartridge(s). Blocking of the nozzles typically occurs
when the printer has been left off for a while (a week or so is all that is
needed). Im not certain with the particulars of HP Deskjet printers, but
usually some tools for cleaning print nozzles is included and this will
probably help if the nozzles are blocked.

If that fails, then I highly suggest buying a complete set of replacement
ink cartridges (use a cheapy online store) and that will almost certainly
resolve the problem.

And if that really doesnt work, either wait for another response or call HP.
:)

Hope that helps!
Regards,
Capt.Crazy

Carol,
Until yesterday, I was using that printer with XP (wife bought me a new one
for my birthday). I had used it with XP since the day XP came out, using the
XP supplied driver. It had served me well. The other day, on one occasion on
a web download, I noticed that black text printed out in a blue hue. I don't
know if it was a fluke or what. I wish I could offer you something more
positive, but I can't.
Good luck

I too, have the same printer and have had it forabout 6 years. While it
isn't a new or higher resolution printer, it has always worked just fine for
my needs. What really impresses me is the "Crazy Guy" who thoroughly
answered your question without jumping to say "that is a relic printer and
you should get up to date with a 'newer' or 'faster' printer, .. A lot of
people would scoff at this printer and suggest a new one, and i am glad
there are savvy people like him, who would answer you with very good
troubleshooting advice and not automatically criticize the printer..

FWIW, when you print an pdf fill-in form, it shows black on the screen but
prints blue. I, too, use an HP printer and see the same thing. It's not a
problem, just and oddity.

On a related note, with my Deskjet 820C, when color is
selected in the driver, blacks come out "composite
black," thereby wasting color ink. Consequently, speed
is SIGNIFICANTLY reduced when printing black on a color
page.

The only guaranteed way of printing from the black
cartridge is to disable the color in the driver.

Also, error-diffusion dithering (black only) can't be
turned on. This is annoying, especially when printing
grayscales.

I think this also applies to other HP printer drivers
that come with XP (and 2000).

I agree, this is what I think happened on the one occasion. My color
cartridge is deficient of one color ink, therefore the faux black minus one
color. Everything else has been normal. The original poster on this thread
might have had a similar experience, except it might have been missing a
different color.

Wow and thanks for your quick response. I've tried the new cartridge route--twice (thinking maybe I got a defective cartridge--even though I only buy new HP cartridges). I've spent the day researching and have stumbled across a possible theory. XP uses RGB print drivers to match RGB screen colors. However, it's possible (even likely) the Deskjet uses YMCK. Now, there's supposed to be a swap utility in the XP program printer utilities. And maybe this is where the problem is. And maybe before I give up I'll figure out how to check and fix it. And maybe, sigh, I'll just bite the bullet and buy a new printer. NOT, needless to say, an HP printer. Although I feel their printers are great, their customer service...let's just say it leaves something to be desired

Carol

I have the exact same problem with my deskjet on xp. If you ever find out what the cause is, let us know, thanks, Wes
