HP DeskJet 400 stopped printing in Windows XP

I upgraded my system in May 2002 but kept my old HP
DeskJet 400. I loaded the print driver sucessfully in May
2002 and the system has worked fine until just several
weeks ago. Now the printer will only print out garbage or
ASCII encoded lines. I tried relaoding the XP compatible
print driver, but the system still will not print
properly, not even the Print Test Page. I have gone
through all the trouble-shooting techniques listed in the
XP Help Menu and on the HP website, but still no luck. The
only thing that I have not tried is changing out the
printer cable, that will be next. Anyone out there that
can shed some light on this problem it will be greatly
appreciated.
