If you can, spend a little more money and get the next model up (which
I believe actually has a /lower/ number, 2550n or something like
that).

The 2600n prints 8 ppm in draft mode, each cartridge is rated for
2,000 sheets at about $70/cartridge, this comes out to about a little
less than .04/page.

The HP inkjet K550 prints 30 ppm in draft mode, each (large capacity,
not regular) cartridge is rated for about 1,650 pages at
$35/cartridge, this comes out to about .02/page.

I don't exactly know the specs for the higher model numbers but I
believe the ppm for black/white is higher (color is still horribly
slow) and the catridges are rated for a higher page count. The 2600n
really isn't a great deal in the long run. But if you do need the
laser quality output for reports, brochures, and such, it might be
better for you. You might also want to look into other brands of laser
printers, I believe the Okidata line gets good reviews.

HP claim that the K550 has laser quality monochome output. My observation is
that they are probably correct. The colour output is very good and HP calim
good print longevity.
The OKI colour lasers are excellent quality and are well equipped with features
like straight paper path and user replaceable fusers, transfer units etc. They
also have many options available.

Suz,

I have an HP 2600n and find it works great for what I do. I print color
fairly rarely and got tired of ink jet cartridges drying out before I used
them up. I like the fact that I can make waterproof business cards and fade
resistant posters. I also have an HP 1012 that I do my bulk of B&W printing
with cartridges are simple to refill.

My situation at work almost exactly. Have a laserjet 3000 that does the
bulk of my printing, but it's nice to have the 2600 around for the
occasional color job. The colorfast almost waterproof prints are
definitely a plus over inkjets. Only beef is the periodic adjustments
the thing does which sounds like it's printing for a few seconds.
Usually does that once or twice a day.

thanx for all the info....one more thing, do these laserjet printers have
the capability to print on glossy photo paper?

HP has a 'Glossy /Laser/ Photo Paper' but the gloss of the print
depends more on the toner than the paper, as the toner sits 'on top'
of the paper, unlike ink which 'soaks into' inkjet photo paper. It
will, however, look more like a photo than printing on card stock
would.

It's not very heavyweight, more like thin cardstock than photo paper.
You may be able to find something heavier from another company.

I have an 1100d, two models prior to the K550, and it has very nice
text output even on plain paper. Good print quality, the only reason
I'm thinking of switching to a K550 is because of the bottom print
margin being nearly .65". I keep hearing mixed reports on the K550
though, so I'm waiting on it for awhile. Plus, the large capacity
carts are /still/ unavailable in my area - so I'm also waiting for
chipped cartridges to be available. I've seen K550 CIS systems but no
individual carts, I think a CIS is a bit overkill for a printer that
already has 60 ml tanks. The K550 supposedly has 'more water
resistant' inks as well.

I think there's an Okidata on sale at Staples this week that's gotten
much better reviews than the HP 2600n. That '8 ppm in draft mode'
bothers me. How long does it take to print in 'best' mode? 1/8ppm?

See the response from Fenrir Enterprises.
Just an addition to this, it is absolutely essential that any coated paper (or
indeed any special paper, like transparencies) you use in any laser printer is
specified for laser printers. Otherwise you will damage the fuser in the
printer.

Suzette-

Others have mentioned the glossy paper available for Laser Printers.
Although Tony mentioned the problem with coated papers, what I didn't see
was the warning: DO NOT USE INKJET GLOSSY PHOTO PAPER IN YOUR LASER
PRINTER!
