HP 8100 Spots

So, I recently picked up an HP 8100 DN (as an upgrade for a slower HP
8000 DN) in exchange for a donation to a non-profit that was no longer
using it. When I tried it out at the non-profit, it seemed to work
fine. However, I've noticed that there are actually light spots on
the printout. These are most noticeable on the bottom empty half of a
page (as darker areas). They are also noticable if you print a
cleaning page (as lighter areas). If the page consists of mostly
text (without large blank areas) they aren't really noticeable. These
spots appear to be random and actually look a little like mold spots.
I.E. they are maybe 1/8 inch and irregular. Now the printer appears
to be overdue for a maintanence kit and is using a rebuilt toner.
Before I replace the toner or do the maintanece kit, does anyone have
any ideas what is likely to be causing these spots and / or if the
toner or maintanence kit will fix it? Thanks.

Run a test using A4 or Letter size paper, do the dots appear to repeat down the
page (holding the paper in LANDSCAPE)? Now measure the exact vertical distance
between repeating dots, again holding the paper in landscape. What is that
distance?

Thanks for the big clue. I should have remembered this. I was
reading the manual a couple of months ago. (But then again, I guess
you come across this more than once every couple of months.)

It looks like 5.5 inches to me. Which I assume is actually 5.55
inches and is the fuser upper roller (from page 491 of the service
manual)? Sounds right to you? And am I correct that a new fuser
assembly in a maint kit should take care of this?

Thanks again for your help here and over the years!

For the record I replaced the fuser and the problem went away. In
fact looking at the old fuser showed a very obvious problem on the
roller.
