HP 6180 All-in-One Software Doesn't Fire Up Anymore--Missing dll

W

W. eWatson

Nothing happens. No software appears. From the Properties of the HP Fast
Star menu item, I see this:

"C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqthb08.exe" -s

The required file does exit.

I cannot fire up the digital imaging monitor, picture package or picture vcd
maker. The last item will fire up from the icon in my tray. So will the
imaging monitor. The other two are not in the tray. What's with all this?

It looks like I will be able to proceed, since the digital image monitor is
up, and it contains about everything.

Spoken too soon. I get the following msg: Failed to load resource DLL
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\OleDB\OLEDB32R.DLL

A Google search for the dll file produces a "dumping ground for dll files",
including this one. Is that for real? Maybe I have no choice. I don't see
the file in the folder given.

Well, I'm stumped.

Re-install your HP software; that should take care of it. Turn off any
anti-virus programs you may have running first.

Been away for a few days. I'd like avoid re-installing. It's a pitiful HP
process. I probably all the download files to install, BUT, early in this
install game, I had to install 3 times with different downloads from their
site. Each download took 3-4 hours, and I was on the phone with their tech
for hours each time. They have the most ridiculous support for install I've
ever encountered. After we concluded the last time, I asked them to send me
a CD with the latest install. Never got it.

It's entirely possible you have malware on your PC and that's what's giving
you fits. Run your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs (after getting the
latest updates) and see if they find anything. If you're clean, we can
proceed.

Do you have a dial-up connection? I can't imagine it taking that long to
download otherwise. I've gotten all the download updates and install files
for my 2355 a shorter time than 3 hours. If you downloaded them once, you
can always burn them to a CD for later use.

The OLEDB32R.DLL file is a Windows data access file. It should be on your
Windows install CD, or in your service pack (whichever SP you have
installed). Have you done a search for the file? If you have it elsewhere,
you can copy it to the C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\OleDB folder,
then register it.

To register it, open a command window (Start, Run, cmd, hit enter).
At the command prompt, type the following lines. Press ENTER after each
line:

cd program files\common files\system\ole db
regsvr32 oledb32r.dll

See if that takes care of the problem.

I seriously doubt I have a virus. I had a similar problem to this, but after
being away for 4 days with the computer down, the program, Acrobat 8, had no
trouble. Still, zero on viruses

DSL, and you wouldn't believe how long those HP tech people can chase around
the maypole.

I'll look into the CD and do a "big" search. I have to register it? I'm not
sure of my SP #, but I've kept XP Pro quite up to date. I long ago went
through the big security update with a SP a few years ago and all recent
updates.

You may not have to register it, but when you run the command line, if it's
already registered, it will say so.

I have a older (1 1/2 years ) J5750 HP All-In-One printer that I was
having problems with starting last November 2. I have been in
communication with HP's service/Help/trouble shooting department since.
What a joke; they don't have a clue about the problem I'm having; they
just keep sending me their usual "Canned" replies/solutions and hope
that I will go away. I'm now at 73 messages from them and have rebooted
over 100 times in trying to get this thing to work.

You have to remember that most of the support departments are minimum wage
personnel reading (basically) a flow chart of the customer's problem(s). My
stepson worked for a cable support dept. and knew absolutely nothing about
computers (other than how to turn it on) or networking, but he reads and
listens very well, and was able to follow the flow. Whenever I have to call
(not him) for cable internet problems, when the 'tech' asks the usual have
you rebooted, cycled your modem, etc., etc., I'll interrupt with "Let me
tell you what I've already done and we can go from there." Sometimes I'll
get someone who actually understands what the procedures are supposed to do,
and that is a joy indeed, since 99% of the time, if I don't have
connectivity, it's the cable company's problem.

Tom, did you get the message I sent to you privately with a jpg file in it?
Maybe you posted a bogus address. Anyway, a thorough search of all the
C-drive came up with several other copies of the file. Should I just copy
one of them over to the proper system folder?

In the interest of keeping spam down to a minimum (20-30 a day now), I don't
post my real address.
Sort the found files by date and use the newest one. That will probably
work.

I certainly don't blame you for that, but it looked ok. I used notvalid in
mine. Should I register it?

I took the dll file dated 2008 April and replaced the other one, and then
registered it. Same story. The hour glass appears momentarily then
disappears without any window appearing. Looking at the task mgr task, I see
about 10 hp...exe files shown. 2 are System, and the rest Admin. Maybe I
need to kill them. I had tried to fire up the HP s/w about 30 minutes before
replacing the dll file. Last night I got a typical once per two weeks or so
reminder from HP that updates were available. I installed them. The tasks
may be a hangover from that.

I don't know what to say. Is there anything erroneous showing up in the
event log? You might try running HijackThis and posting in an appropriate
forum. The Elder Geek is a good one. Other than doing the complete
uninstallation and reinstallation, I don't know what else to tell you that
may help.

Event log? Now there's something I haven't used in quite awhile. I just
opened it, and am looking at Application. Logs of warnings from MsInstaller
on 2/7, but few yesterday. One yesterday is Error from user N/A. System
shows various msgs. A few errors on W32Time and Print. I really don't know
what to make of them. sbcglobal.com sierra_mtnview (a simple puzzle), if you
want me to send you pix of what I see.

One good thing about the printer is that I can do just anything from the
front control panel in the way of printing, scanning, sending output to the
computer, sending to a thumb-disk, etc.

I think this is pretty much solved now. Very clever. The HP menu
installation shows a list. The first item looks like it should produce the
proper entry to fire up the printer software. It's the one I had selected. I
recently noticed another one near the bottom. It properly brings up the
software that allows one to manipulate printing, scanning, faxing, etc. It
is now the first item! HP strikes again.
