hp 5p laserjet config software

E

Ernie Rubadue

I bought a laserjet 5p at a garage sale. It works great, but I need to
get the software used to configure it. ( powersave, economode etc.) I
search HP website but cant find a place to order it. So I think it
would be ok if someone would give me a copy of it. Anybody out there
have it?

Thanks

Ernie

Get the driver on HP.com.
(from <http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html> type in
"laserjet 5p" and you get all the files and info you should need.
Then you should be able to find these settings under the "properties"
of the printer in the Control Panel, (assuming you're using Windows).

As I said in my post, my first stop was the HP website. But thanks for
your response.

Do you mean there is no driver, or that it doesn't give you these
features?

I have an HP4. In Win98 I just used the built in Windows driver and I
have these settings under Printer Properties.

Since the HP5P is also a PCL5 printer, most settings should work the
same.

"RET" for instance is set at "printer default" on mine. I can either
override it there or change the default on the prnter's LCD panel
cycling through the "Printing menu" settings -- does the 5P have this?

You can change it in software too.
If you follow the HP link above and download the DOS software you'll
get a bundle that includes the "Remote Control Panel". That would send
PJL (Printer Job Language) commands to the printer.

Or you can hack these yourself. Get a PJL manual, eg
<http://www.brother.de/download\files\dokumente\guides_pjl.pdf>

Eg, to change RET to LIGHT I think you would send a string like

<ESC>%-12345X@PJL <CR><LF>
@PJL DEFAULT RET = LIGHT <CR><LF>
@PJL RESET <CR><LF>
<ESC>%-12345X

(<ESC> is the escape character #027; put all these in a file light.pjl
and do
copy /b light.pjl lpt1:
assuming you have the printer on the 1st parallel port.
