Howto migrate data to new 2003 PST file?

I'm using Outlook 2003 in standalone mode (no Exchange Server). In order to
benefit from the new PST file format in 2003, I read I have to create a new
PST file. But I've been unable to find hints how to safely migrate my
existing data to the new file. Is there a step-by-step instruction how to
create a new PST file and then migrate the data from the old PST to the new
one?

Thanks, Frank

Sure the safest and only way to do so is to import your old pst file into the new from File-Import and Export. For step by step instructions
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;287070 (it is for outlook 2002, but the procedure is the exact same steps

That's not the *only* way to do it. You can also open your old .PST file
alongside the new one in the Folder List (in Outlook, use File | Open |
Outlook Data File), then drag and drop data from the old file to the new
one. User-created folders can be dragged and dropped in their entirety; for
default folders like the Inbox, you'd need to select all the items WITHIN
the folder and copy just the items to the new Inbox.

Importing and exporting in Outlook should really only be used for migrating
data to or from another program or file format (such as .CSV). It's not a
perfect process, and data and settings are often lost.

Well, I did start the process before reading this second response. I've got
two problems after finishing. One I could easily fix (so it's an ongoing and
time consuming process) - I lost all my rules.

the second issue is maybe just cosmetic. I now have two "Personal Folders"
entries in my folder list. The second one, obviously a broken link to the
old PST file is a left-over that I can't delete. It's of no use, and
obviously it doesn't cause any real issues, but I'd still like to get rid of
it. I copied in the old PST file, and - when Outlook runs, I can't delete it
which means Outlook actually opens the file - but that doesn't help. Still
no possibility to remove that extra Personal Folder entry. Any fix for that?

Thanks, Frank

So when you say you tried to delete it, you right-clicked its root folder
and clicked Close, but got no response? And/or you tried deleting it via
File | Data File Management? If neither of those things worked, the easiest
way to fix the "ghost" .PST issue is to create a new mail profile and attach
only the known good .PST file to it.
