The subject says it mostly as it also applies to any version
that has service packs....

Once in a while I get replies the "fix" is to use a version of the
xp cdrom that has the sp1 included so that a necessary re-install
xp won't require a re-install of the service pack separately.

Also the drivers for the WD 160 gig is supposed to have been fixed
with the service pack 1; with the original I have to specify each
time to load the driver from the diskette.

I haven't seen any documentation/info on how to create the xp cdrom
with the embedded service pack; at leas by "plain" users who are not
developers & don't need to purchase the costly development stuff just
to create the embedded service pack xp cdrom; nor do we want to
purchase another costly xp cdrom hoping that it would be embedded with
the service pack as I don't know if it would be marked explicitely so.

Is the embedded service pack xp cdrom creation a secret for developers
& the "one-upmanship" of people answering questions?

I would imagine the info would be freely deseminated but where??

It's called intergraded install or slipstreaming. See the link below and
substitute SP1 for SP2. Same procedure.
