Keep in mind what Tom said, GIF. Many people try to do this with other image
types but you need the right one. The JPG image format does not have an
alpha channel. In other words, you can't make it transparent. PNG files can
be made transparent, but there are still a number of people who have
browsers that don't support PNG files. If you need transparency, your best
bet is a GIF file.
 
Use an image editor. Save the image as a Gif, with the transparent
background option. Only possible with GIF format, not JPG.
