Hi Roy,
Thank u very much for your quick reply.
Actually I have tried this. That is I downloaed the HP USB Disk Storage
Format Tool Version 2.0.6 utility, installed it on my system & created a dos
bootable pen drive. Then i extracted the windows XP SP3 iso image to the pen
drive & booted the system using this pen drive. System get booted to dos
prompt but OS installtion is not started. For your information, the size of
USB pen drive is 2Gb & size of iso file is 600MB.
If you have successfully done this, then please let me know the procedure
you followed.

Thanks in advance

Hi roy,
thanks once again.
I have used windows 98 bootable floppy to create a bootable pen drive.
So on my pen drive, there are only IO.SYS, MSDOD.SYS & COMMAND.COM get
created, nothing else & may be because of this my pen drive get booted to dos
prompt i.e C:\.

Thanks,
best regards

An "ISO" image is not bootable - the reason for "...the need for a blank
dvd..." is for the bootable image created from the "ISO" image.

Also something is amiss regarding "... size of iso file is 600MB...." - the
Vista ISO image is roughly 2.2 gigs in size (reason for a DVD).

You can't use the Windows 98 boot files for XP or Vista, you have to use the
boot files for XP or Vista since they don't run on "DOS". I know that XP
boot floppies can be created, I don't now about Vista.

Bookmarked that page. That could come in handy. I already use a USB drive
for BIOS updates. Dell's refurbished GX270 mobos don't always come with the
latest. If any of you have to support GX270's you know the hell that is my
job.

Hi roy,
I tried to run the setup.exe from dos prompt but it prompt me the error that
' This program can not be run in dos mode'. Then i tried to run
/i386/winnt.exe, it starts the installation. But the installation process
don't prompt the custom options like where to install, delete existing
partitions & create new one etc. It directly copies the installation files to
usb pen drive not to hard disk & installed the OS on pen drive only.

Thanks

To create a XP bootable floppy, I formatted the floppy under XP & then
copied NTDETECT.COM, NTLDR, IO.SYS, MSDOS.sys files from the XP installed
system to it. But it don't create a XP bootable floppy. Do know any other way
to create it?

Thanks in advance

You want NTDETECT, NTLDR and BOOT.INI.
That is what you put on the floppy.
You can then use NERO to copy it to CD.
It is tricky as you don't copy the files, but the whole of the A:
Drive(including the files!) to the CD using NERO.
The CD then becomes bootable the way I do it.

You can alter the Boot.ini file to suit the computer that you want to boot,
as in Windos XP Home, Windows XP Professional

Unpack the contents of the iso onto your hd.
Copy all the files from the unpacked iso onto your key.
This should create a duplicate of the bootable disk.

Have you actually done that? I tried that and variations
of that in an attempt to convert the contents of a live CD to
a live USB, and the USB never booted. (And yes, my
laptop can boot from USB devices.)

I'm there with you - I have to deal with the entire Optiplex line from
the GX60 onward. At least the more recent models are better...
