Hi,

Just wandering how you could scan for a virus on a computer that has no
antivirus software. I tried installing my Symantec product on my mates PC
but it is disabled as I have activated it on my own PC. Please advise.

thanks, Tim

There are anti virus News Groups specifically for this type of discussion.

microsoft.public.security.virus
alt.comp.virus
alt.comp.anti-virus

You can MAP a drive or you can install the hard disk in a surrogate PC that host anti
virua/anti malware software.

However... It will only scan files. The Registry which is also affected by the malware
will be scanned on the surrogate PC or the PC creating the Mapped drive NOT the PC or PC
hard disk of the affected computer.

Mapping drives can be done but only by an experienced professional. If this is a Internet
worm that uses NetBIOS over IP to infect then the surrogate could be infected.

Placing the drive in a surrogate PC is a mucg better prospect.

Another is to use an easily installed "On Demand" scanner sucgh as my Multi AV Scanning
Tool.

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

There are FREE anti-virus programs, perhaps better than the ones
requiring a yearly fee. NAV is considered slow. I suggest your mate
installing one of the following:

Free AVG
Alwil Avast!

It is a good thing that your PC and your mate's PC have different
anti-virus applications. I recommend removing the NAV first; you can
download a small program from Symantec to remove it from your mate's
PC.

Getting back your original question... If your mate's PC is on a LAN
you can scan it from your PC. Go to My Network Places, View
Workgroup Computers, then right-click and select Scan.

Go through these general malware removal steps systematically -
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Do the prep/finishing work and start by scanning with either Sysclean or
Multi_AV. Include Ewido and follow instructions to do all work in Safe
Mode. As the instructions explain, you must get all tools and updates from
a different, known-clean machine and either burn them to cd-r or have a usb
thumb drive with enough capacity.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - have your friend take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

Install an antivirus in safe mode. Apps. here:

Actually, that usually won't work. It depends on the infections but most
current flavors of malware will break any av and/or stop any new av from
being installed. The best thing to do is clean the machine up part way,
then scan with Sysclean or Multi_AV, and then install a full-featured av,
update it and do a thorough scan with it in Safe Mode.

The best bet is NOT to choose to install spyware in the first place.

The problem is one often does not choose nor have a choice.

All you need is a vulnerability and an exploitation and you can be infected with viral or
non-viral malware without your knowledge and definitely without a "choice".

Take the MS06-40 vulnerability and the IRC-MOCBOT.

Or the RPC/RPCSS DCOM and LSASS vulnerabilities and the SDBot, Rbot, SpyBot, Lovsan/Blaster,
Sasser, et, al.

Or the Sun Java vulnerability and the Vundo Trojan/Virtuomunde adware.

The list goes on....

One always has the choice. Most often ignored tho.
