How to unlock selection in order to modify within Word?

I am having trouble modifying text within my Microsoft Word documents. I
keep getting the message that I cannot modify because the selection has been
locked.

If this is a newish computer, then your version of Word is almost certainly
a trial version that has expired. If you have actually purchased a retail
version of Office/Word, then you have not activated it.
