why cant i make modifications because my page is locked?

i opened an attachment from my email, and it should have opened in microsoft
word... however when i try to modify it it says that i am not allowed to make
modifications because it is locked.

how do i unlock this so i can edit? thanks!

I assume it was a word document (.doc). It sounds like it is Read-Only..
save it, then reopen it to edit.
