Hi:

Does anyone know of a simple way to completely uninstall versions of AOL
when the Add/Remove Programs does not work? (Says it cannot find the
installed versions, which are installed.)

I sure would appreciate any recommendations.

Thanks

The last time I was involved with a machine that had to have AOL completely
uninstalled, we had to reformat the computer.

IF Add/Remove shows it is not installed, are you using the program or is
there just a AOL folder on the HD.
If no more than a folder do a plain old fashion delete.

I believe, unfortunately, the AOL software embeds itself so deeply in the
OS, that to truly be rid of all of it, you would need to do a reformat and
clean install of XP.

AOL's code is so tightly woven into the windows code that only a
complete format and clean OS install will remove it.

The same goes for Norton.

Good luck.

You could try first re-installing AOL to replace the Control Panel
entry, and then uninstall it properly. However, I'm not all that
confident that it would do you much good.

Sadly, the only practical way I've ever found to completely remove
AOL from an operating system is to format the hard drive and perform a
clean installation. I absolutely loathe having to resort to a hard
drive format to fix what should be a relatively minor issue, but it
takes a lot less time than manually removing/replacing all of the
Windows system files that AOL replaces with their own versions and the
hundreds of unnecessary registry entries.

Sad but true!

AOL, which is the single most malicious piece of software ever written,
infests and infects every part of the Windows operating system so
insidiously that the only way to "get rid of it" is to wipe the drive and
re-install.

Which is one of the reasons I decided to start this site:

http://genuinewindows.co.uk

as a resource for buyers, so they don't have to repeat this exercise once
someone else has learned the hard way about that particular model of
computer, and shared their knowledge.. The site's live but to get it rolling
we need enough reports to make a useable database, and that's still in
progress.
