How to uninstall WMP 11?

Trevor

My WMP 11 has stopped working (it stops working immediately on launch). How
can I uninstall it?

Carey Frisch [MVP]

WMP 11 cannot be uninstalled in Windows Vista.

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories and right-click
on the Command Prompt and choose "Run as administrator".
Type in: SFC /SCANNOW and press your Enter key.

This procedure will scan Vista's protected system files
and attempt to repair or replace missing or corrupt files.

Have you recently installed a codec pack, sound driver or add-on to WMP?

WMP 11 is part of Vista itself, not a separate add on therefore it can't be
uninstalled. You would do better trying Carey's suggestion of using System
File Checker 'SFC /SCANNOW

WMP11 Linksys Wireless-B PCI Adapter, or Windows Media Player 11?

Why?

Is Microsoft forcing you to have their stuff installed even if you do
not want it?

I get a message that I must be an administrator running a console session in
order to use the sfc utility, but as far as I am aware I am an
administrator (it's my PC and no one else's)

Managed to run this by going into safe mode, but it didn't find anything and
WMP still not working. BTW RealPlayer has also packed in. When I launch that
nothing happens - it used to say it has had stopped working but not even
that now.

Go to Start > Type: Run in the Search Box > then type: regsvr32 wmp.dll
and press the Enter key.

Please click the Start Orb and type "cmd" in the Start/Search box but do NOT
hit Enter. Look at the top of the menu pane and right click on the CMD
icon. Choose "Run as Administrator." In the command window that opens type
"sfc /scannow" and hit Enter. The System File Checker then searches for
corrupted system files and replaces them from good copies in a protected
folder.

You are a standard user that has administrative rights when running as an
administrator. But you don't just run as administrator all the of the time
like XP. Other users will not have rights even if they try to run as
administrator unless they have your credentials. That's the way it is in
Vista.

I get:

The module wmp.dll was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with
error code 0x8002801c.

A: That's because you have to do that from an elevated cmd.exe prompt.
B: It's also a bad plan in isolation because it will corrupt the registry
with XP-only entries, as wmp.dll's DllRegisterServer is for XP - the
component install system normally handles wmp.dll's registration entries.

This KB:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947541
more or less shows how to reregister wmp.dll on Vista. It's not the best
plan anyways, but if you really think it's super-critical, that's at least
how to do it without breaking yourself further. =\
